REVIEW: Maybelline "Mega Plush" Volume Express Mascara

So I'm currently interested in finding a new favourite drugstore mascara. Ever since my dearly devoted Rimmel Lash Flirt was plucked off the shelves, I've been on the hunt to find another cheap fucker to give me the same results.

I had heard a lot of praise about the Mega Plush mascara on the youtubes, so I decided to pick up a tube and see if it was as truly magical as the other gurus have said it was.
So the mascara claims to yield mega volume and length with this odd brush that has the ability to wiggle. The idea is that the added flexibility of the brush wand will allow for more volume and length when applied to your lashes.

The wand is fucking GIGANTIC. I found it incredibly difficult to apply this mascara without either poking my eyes or getting mascara all over my lids. I also barely got any of the product on my lower lashes without making a huge mess. Not exactly great for precise application. I'm not a huge fan of fucking up my perfectly applied eyeshadow.

The formula of the mascara is supposed to be a gelatinous texture. Overall, I just found it to be extremely wet. Between the wand and the formula, it's pretty difficult to not make a mess out of this mascara.

Here are the results:

BEFORE

AFTER

Now this photographed application is after my third try of using this mascara, so I was really careful not to smear it all over the place like I had the first time.

You'll notice that my lashes are defined and definitely look longer, but they are not at all volumized and frankly look pretty damn unimpressive. My personal issue with the mascara is that it doesn't make my eyelashes stand out against my black thick eyeliner like other mascaras have.

The wear on this mascara lasted about 8 hours on me. It didn't fade, smudge, or flake out on me.

Overall, I'm not a fan of this mascara. It's messy and difficult to apply, and even when you master the application, the results aren't very exciting.

If you have a drugstore mascara you think I should try out, please please PLEASE comment below your suggestion!

  2. Hey Rach,
I tried this product too and I hated it. I use it sometimes and then I think to myself, why the fuck am I using this shitty ass shit. I like the maybelline line alot but I was very unimpressed with it as you were. It was annoying that the brushed always moved and I felt like I was poking my eye out too. Anyways I know you're not here to read about what I feel about it haha.

My personal favorite that I like to use is the Covergirl Lashblash volume. I think it does a wonderful job giving your eyelashes the volume that you want and it makes them look thick and full. But that's just me. It's about the same price if not more or less than the shitty mega plush asshole but I really like it. Im sure you've probably used it before but if you havent I think it does a very good job :) Im sorry you were as disapointed with this product as I was.

  3. My Favorite is Covergirl Lash Blast Volume. It's very comfortable to wear, doesn't flake or smudge, gives me really good length and volume. I have the regular and waterproof. The waterproof is crazy waterproof, so I prefer the regular one. I also like the look of the end result I get with the Maybelline Falsies Flared and a lash comb, but there are drawbacks. Mainly, it is kind of uncomfortable to wear.

  4. Maybelline Falsies Flared! :) Best one I've ever tried. I wouldn't recommend curling your lashes before you apply it though, because the mascara does that itself :)

  5. L’oréal Paris Voluminous mascara in Carbon Black has been my go-to for about five years. The brush is medium sized, and the formula seriously makes my eyelashes look long and thick as fuck. It’s about $6 at a drugstore, and in comparison to a MAC mascara I bought, this one is better quality. If you buy it, make sure you look to see you aren’t getting the waterproof kind, it’s a bitch to get off. Overall it lasts all day and doesn’t flake off. It’s super good quality.

  6. I really enjoy NYC mascaras, I feel like they are mostly overlooked because they are so cheap, but they're actually pretty quality mascaras. I've owned them all, I liked the orange one and the fat pink and green one the best (forgot the names, I suck)Maybelline XXL Pro Curl is also really good. :)

  7. I've also tried the Covergirl Lash Blast Volume, but only in waterproof. It looks AWESOME on (great length/volume, almost like fake lashes on me, but without clogging or gunking up), but it's a bitch to take off--no joke. I definitely want to try the regular version, myself.

  8. the maybelline colossal express cat eyes mascara. i heard great things about it and i saw it at walmart for only $5 i think its worth a try it has a curved brush

  9. Right now my two favorite drug store mascaras are:

L'Oreal Paris - Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Black Lacquer

    and

Maybelline - The Colossal Volum' Express (yellow tube, soft brush, NOT the rubber brush)

Both give great volume and length. The combination of the two can be killer! I find if I use the False Fiber Lash first and then the Colossal Volum' second, my lashes are so long and full that people are constantly asking me if they are fake!

Here is a pic of my eyes using just the False Fiber Lashes

  10. Have you tried the l'oreal luminous bullshit everyone raves about? I currently have the mega plush and I agree it's nothing exciting but I'm really interested to try the l'oreal one

  11. This shit burned the FUCK out of my eyes while trying to take it off. L'oreal Telescopic, the carbon black one. If it's not in a black tube, you grabbed the wrong one. There's like a silver one and gold one.

  12. It actually took a few weeks for this one to grow on me, because I hated it at first too. But if you like Rimmel I suggest their scandalEYES Lycra Flex mascara, it's kind of the same idea where it lets your lashes bend and they're not hard, but it's insanely volumizing and I love it.

  13. I use the loreal voluminous million lashes stuff in the tube that looks like a vibrator, but i mostly just use mascara for volumizing because my lashes are long anyways, but it makes your eyelashes look a lot thicker and makes them stand out with black liner1

  14. Maybelline Define-A-Lash. I went to the drug store with intentions of getting the "Mega Plush" Volume Express, but there was this huge diagram of maybelline mascaras at the display that showed how each mascara would make your lashes look, and the Mega Push looked kind of too thick for me, so I went with the define-a-lash, and it really really lengthens and thickens my lashes to like just the right level. I seriously recommend it!

  15. Meh. I agree. Maybelline mascaras suck overall.

  16. I tried many other mascaras, but I always went back to Lash Blast. I just can't let go. It gives me AMAZING results! I love how long my lashes look after just one coat. Two coats are even better. It's really easy to apply to my lower lashes too. LOVE IT<3

  17. Try the maybelline great lash!

  18. You must try Cover Girl Lash Perfection. It's like Lash Blast but with a smaller brush. Jordana Best Lash Extreme is also excellent.

  19. The Classic Volum' Express from Maybelline!! I don't want to sound like an ass but the one thing I usually get complimented on is my lashes and it's basically because of this mascara (✿◠‿◠)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I LOVE Rimmel's Sexy Curves mascara (amazing volume) and their Lash Accelerator (lame lash growth claims aside, it gives really lovely length!). Rimmel is really my favorite for drugstore mascaras, it's such a bummer that they discontinued Lash Flirt!

  21. Revlon Photoready 3D Volume is my new fave for everyday lashes!

  22. Oh, what a disappointment. I am also looking for a holy grail drugstore mascara and was hoping this would be the one. The drugstore mascara I currently use and is the closest to holy grail that I have gotten is the Covergirl Lashblast Fusion. I don't recall seeing it in your videos so I'm wondering if you've ever tried it.

  23. I don't know if you have this is America, but L'Oreal Paris Lash Architect 4D is AMAZING.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I normally use revlon photoready mascara underneath this and then use this as a second coat. I love it! I would say that this mascara gets a little better when you've been using it for a while, too.

  25. I fucking hated this mascara. All the gurus I watch were shitting their pants about it, so of course I go get one and it sucks. Hard. I had the same problem; it just made a huge mess everywhere and mine was just so gloopy and disgusting. Threw it in the trash. Good riddance.

  26. Falsies by Maybelline!!! I'm so in love with it. :)

  27. I feel like you would like L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black. I can't remember if you've tried it.

  28. My Biggest Lashes by Prestige is probable the best mascara i've ever tried :), but the wand is pretty big.

  29. I loovvve Physician's Formula Organic Wear Lash Boosting mascara. :)

  30. I actually like this mascara. This isn't designed to lengthen. I reviewed this mascara on my blog (http://swatchingoddity.blogspot.ca/2012/06/maybelline-mega-plush-mascara-review_06.html).

  31. I have always really liked Maybelline Volum' Express Colossal Mascara or L'oreal Voluminous Million Lashes.

  32. Max Factor 2000 Calorie is freaking amazing...

  33. Maybelline Volum' Express - The Colossal. all time favourite drugstore mascara!

  34. Maybelline one by one, it is the one beauty product I have repurchased at least 3 times. I have tried the mega plush and it did nothing for me, one by one is the way to go. I personally like the non- waterproof formula better. (I wear it on my bottom lashes all of the time and I have never had it running down my face

    Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Maybelline Colossal lash is probably my favorite drug store mascara :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I really like the Power Volume Collagen mascara by L'Oreal. I have really long lashes to begin with, but it really makes my eyelashes look like I'm wearing false ones. I wear really think eyeliner like you do, and the results of the mascara made my eyelashes stand out even with the thick eyeliner. I personally love the waterproof version, and it is pretty easy to get off the lashes. Hope this helped!

  37. I have also been on the hunt for a good volumizing mascara. The ones I really like are Maybelline Full N Soft Waterproof, Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black, and Mary Kay Lash Love.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Covergirl's lash blast volume is the best for me, I have the normal version, not the waterproof one and I think it's pretty good and easy to take off, the thing is I don't know if it lasts a lot, I guess it does

  39. I have them all from above and still have not found one better than my Tarte LCL.I am trying a few right now but hate to recommend because I have no idea what kind of lashes you have and hate for people to waste money.Sorry but I love ya that much.

  40. nurberxo on youtube swears by the JORDANA BEST LAST EXTREME (i can only find it at walgreens). she's talked about it so much and has awesome lashes and i finally tried it. I LOVE IT. i think it's $1.79 or something, but i would pay $15 if that's what they charged. it has a dense brush that isn't super chunky. the formula is a little thicker, but it coats your lashes and makes them look full and dense. it's awesome. totally worth a try for under $2!

  41. Try the volum' express cateye from maybelline. It's the yellow tube. Just picked one up yesterday, love how it defines my lashes and makes them longer. I have the same problem with having my lashes stand out against my black liner - this mascara definitely worked for me!

  42. Covergirl lash blast is amazing! If you guys have Big Lots up there you can get a tube for 1.50$ and it's amazing

    ReplyDelete
  43. i just tried isadora's big bold mascara, it's really good and give me long and thick lashes(and volume). I always use eyeliner too, and the lashes really stands out. I actually think it's a bit like Lancomes hypnose star mascara, the lashes just get a little thicker(but that's on my lashes, and obviously i can't say it would look good on you lashes). But, the brush is gigantic tho. but i don't have any problem with it. :)

  44. Rimmel ScandalEyes is really remarkable. I use the regular formula every day and the waterproof for on stage stuff and both are fantastic!! I have really whimpy lashes but you'd never know. I like Rimmel's applicators too because they don't screw up your face. Thanks for the honest review on Mega Plush. You save me some wasted bucks!

  45. Almay Get Up And Grow. I know, it's random (I always thought Almay was for old people LOL) but in seriously LOVE IT.

Maybelline mascaras suck in general. I've never understood the hype.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Two mascaras are my favorite at the time:
    Maybeline Great Lash - BIG
Maybeline One By One (with this one I NEED to apply two coats, or my lashes only look longer and not volumized at all !)

    Have fun (:

  47. I actually like the Mega Plush. My best friend has some, and it looked great on her, so silly me, I thought it would look good. I got it, and it worked pretty well, but I barely use it because I actually have 2 favorites. The first one is Grow Luscious Plumping by Revlon (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3430079). It is AMAZING. I have thin, short eyelashes, and this thing makes them look like a professional did my eyes, and I'm not very handy with a wand. Unfortunately, I'm running low, so I'm going to need to restock soon! My other favorite is Rimmel Lash Accelerator (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=345381&catid=183541&aid=338666&aparam=goobase_filler) because like I said above, I have very thin, short lashes. I've been using this religiously since I got it about 2 months ago, and I actually HAVE seen an increase in my natural lashes. It's supposed to lengthen them and make them fuller, and surprisingly, it does the job. I recommend them both, they're fantastic and the second one really works well with extending lashes (and really, what's wrong with a little extra length)!

  48. And I was thinking of buying that mascara.. Heck no - I don't wanna spend hours trying to figure out how to use it without messing up my face! Thanks, Rachel :)
