REVIEW: Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm

I've been on the hunt for a new foundation or BB cream that I actually like ever since my dearly devoted L'oreal Magic Smooth Souffle was discontinued. Even though I hoarded a bunch of them, I know they won't last forever, so it was finally time to find something new.

I went to Ulta on a whim and was testing out all the different BB creams. The Too Faced one caught my eye immediately, because the shade seemed to suit me really well and it swatched nicely on my hand.

However, upon applying this to my face, I was left really disappointed.

The Too Faced BB cream says it's supposed to be "light diffusing", "antiaging and prevent damage", and "moisturizing with an oil free hydration".

I found this particular BB cream to be a hot  mess. It is a nice consistency, not too thick or too watery, but once applied to the face, this "oil free hydration" really just made my skin feel really gross. After applying one layer, I immediately wanted to wash my face.

As far as moisturizers go, I don't want my mosturizer (BB cream or not) to make my face feel tacky and like I just came back from the gym. This BB also never seems to set, which is really frustrating.

As far as coverage, this barely did a thing. The (not even horrible) redness in my cheeks was still completely visible after two "coats". (see picture below)

Not only was my redness still visible, my skin just felt oily and I looked extremely shiny. And because this product doesn't seem to set, I can only assume it would transfer onto EVERYTHING.

Overall, I was highly disappointed with this product. I am aware Too Faced is coming out with a cream style BB cream really soon, but I will most likely be reading reviews rather than going out to try that one after dealing with this one.

If you guys have any BB cream recommendations, send them my way. I know a lot of you guys are going to suggest the Asian ones, but I'd really prefer one that I could swatch for myself (in Sephora or Ulta) just so I won't end up with a colour problem.

Stila has a new one out that seems very promising. I swatched it in Sephora and it was what I wanted to get if the Too Faced one didn't work. I was so surprised by the Too Faced one; normally I really like their skins products. Alas, this product will end up in my January shits.

  1. I just bought the Garnier one. It's pretty thick, but I really like it so far. Has great coverage for me. Its about $13 at Walgreens. Try it!

  2. I really like the Garnier one but it feels like I'm the only person who does! It doesn't make me look oily (I have dry skin) it's coverage is medium but you can't really expect extremely high coverage from a BB cream! I like it.

    1. I like the Garnier one too, but for me it's more of a tinted moisturizer to be honest. It doesn't feel balmy like other BB creams. I like using that one in the summer when I just want to feel refreshed with a little coverage.

  4. BB creams aren't supposed to be really covering actually... It's primarily a skincare that is a bit tinted. But anyways, I understand your disappointment with the fact that it doesn't set. I think you can find the Clinique one in the US, it's really nice! I you can't find it I can send you one if you want.

    1. Actually, traditional BB creams are supposed to give a lot of coverage! A lot of the Western brands putting them out lately have just been dropping the ball and missing the point. They're supposed to work as an entire skincare system, foundation, and concealer all in one.

  5. I suggest looking into the Asian BB creams, I bought the BRTC Jasmine Water BB cream and I actually like it. I love that the color matches me pretty well, because I'm very fair, its also really blendable. I think it gives a pretty natural finish not too dewy, not matte either. I got mine off of Amazon, they have a pretty big selection of BB creams from Asia, so I suggest checking it out! :)

  6. I really like the Smashbox BB Cream. I think it's hit or miss with people, probably depending on skin type, but give it a swatch when you are at Sephora or Ulta next time. I do usually set it with powder.

  7. I kind of like the Garnier one, but I haven't been using it lately because since I live in Florida, on hot days it just felt like it was melting off my face. I'm still looking for a good one, and I'm iffy about trying the ones from overseas for the exact reason you are.
I want to try the new Revlon one as it swatched nicely on my hand.
Plus I'm really curious about the MAC one because it's a solid, so I feel like that would transfer better.

  8. I got a sample of the Smashbox BB cream at sephora and I really liked it. I have oily combo skin and I thought this was going to be horrible but it was actually nice. It also sets and has a good amount of coverage. It covers the little bit of redness I have but I still need concealer on blemishes. I would definitely say try it!

  9. i really like the bobbi brown one :) it's a little pricey but it's definitely worth the money. the coverage is pretty okay. i wouldn't recommend it if you have a lot of acne scars, but if you're looking for something that will even out skin tone and uneven patches on the skin, this one definitely! it's more of a dewy finish than a matte one.

  10. I really, really like the Rimmel one. It's a bit limited in colour choice, and the lightest one isn't that light at all, but the coverage is great (though it wouldn't work for huge cystic acne or scars) and it evens out skin tone really naturally. It looks quite shitty in the first minute after application, but I am always shocked when I look in the mirror after five minutes or so. It seems to set in a way that makes the skin look so beautiful and naturally clear. Anyway, I'm impressed, and have been wearing it more often than foundation ever since I bought it. That's my essay over, you should try the Rimmel BB cream!

  11. The only BB cream I've tried is Missha "Signature Real Complete BB Cream SPF25" and I really like it. I'm super pale and shade 21 works well for me. I was able to swatch mine at the Japanese store I go to so finding a shade wasn't too difficult. It provides really good coverage without breaking me out or accentuating dryness; can't really ask for more! :)

    1. It's true, the cream is amazing. It's got great coverage, it sets well, and it keeps the oily parts of my face from being shiny, while still keeping the rest of my skin moisturized. But if you can't get to an Asian cosmetic shop to swatch it, the Dr. Jart+ line that Sephora carries (at least, in Canada) is really nice as well.

  12. Love the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream. I know a lot of people don't like, but it's like a drink of moisture for my really dry skin. Don't use this as a foundation replacement, but rather under makeup to really moisturize your skin and give you some light coverage. I use this in summer, fall, winter, and spring to make my skin look that much nicer. It's light in consistency and feel and will give you light coverage and a dewy glow (without being oily). Awesome for sensitive skin, and great shade range. No harsh or pore-clogging ingredients in this one!

  13. My favorite BB Cream is the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream. I got it as a gift for Christmas and I love it. It's not the best for redness/acne unless you apply more to the redder areas, but if you use it with a concealer, then you should be perfect. The formula is really light and it is a little moisturizing. I still use my moisturizer with it in the winter, but I'm sure that once it's warmer I won't have to use a moisturizer at all (and it has SPF!).

  14. garnier came out with a new bb cream which i like. but for everyday i use the dr jart black label and omg i cant say enough good things about it. it covers all of my redness (which is waaay worse than yours) and you cant feel it at all. you can rub your face and it feels completely bare yet hydrated and it doesnt transfer. u can also look really close up at your skin and cant tell at all that you have anything on your skin. i have gotten like a fuck ton of compliments on my skin which sounds weird and hasnt happened to me before this and im in looove

  15. The new Tarte BB cream is awesome, I love it. It says something about being a BB primer or some shit, but ignore the wording/marketing...it's more of a BB cream than that Maybelline or Too Faced garbage. You can get it at Ulta!

  16. I really like the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream! it's probably not the best for someone with a lot of spots or super oily skin, but I found that on me it really evens out my skin tone, cancels out most of the redness in my cheeks, and stays put all day! So I'd recommend that one, and I think it's only about $9? Another one I like is the Smashbox one, but I've only used it from a couple of samples I picked up, so I can't really say a lot about it.

  17. I tried the Stila one and I loved it! I would love to try this too even though it is sheer.
